Cooling bifacial PV thermal solar panels with jet impingement

Scientists created a model to study bifacial PV thermal (BPVT) solar panels using jet impingement and built an experimental setup to validate it. They achieved a thermal efficiency of 62.28%, while electrical efficiency peaked at 11.22%.

PV panel, battery production up to 45% more expensive in EU than in China, IEA finds

Despite the ongoing implementation of industrial strategies in other countries, the value of China’s exports will exceed $340 billion by 2035, according to the International Energy Agency.

Mitigation strategies against islanding in grid-connected PV systems

Researchers in India have proposed a new set of techniques to mitigate total harmonic distortions during islanding events, which occur in distributed generation systems when there are disruptions in the power grid. Compared to conventional approaches, it reportedly achieves faster detection times by leveraging real-time data analytics and dynamically adjusting to changing grid conditions.

Solar module manufacturing capacity could exceed 1.5 TW by 2035, says IEA

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) latest report, which maps out the future evolution of clean energy manufacturing, says the combined global market for PV, wind turbines, electric cars, batteries, electrolyzers, and heat pumps will rise from $700 billion in 2023 to more than $2 trillion by 2035.

European team targets 20%-efficient perovskite modules using industrial processes

The LUMINOSITY project consortium aims to develop 20%-efficient metal halide perovskite prototype modules measuring over 900 cm², designed for a 20-year lifespan and compatibility with roll-to-roll (R2R) processing.

Perovskite solar cell built with slot die coating achieves 19.17% efficiency

A team from Jeonbuk National University in South Korea used slot die coating (SDC) to produce uniform high-quality perovskite films, which they used in a perovskite solar cell that achieved 19.17% efficiency and lab cell-sized modules that achieved 17.42% efficiency.

Ultra-short-term PV power forecast based on dung beetle algorithm

Researchers have developed a novel deep-learning method to predict ultra-short-term PV power, using an optimization method that is based on the behavior of dung beetles. The proposed approach reportedly performed better than seven other conventional prediction methods over a 1-year period.

Chinese PV Industry Brief: TCL Zhonghuan, Maxwell post Q3 results

TCL Zhonghuan has reported a net loss of CNY 2.998 billion ($420 million) for the third quarter of 2024, while Hunan Huamin Holdings posted a CNY 187.5 million loss, and Maxwell Technologies disclosed a modest rise in net profit for the July-September period.

New tech to recover high-purity silicon powder from end-of-life solar panels

Korean researchers have used thermal and wet gravity separation (WGS) to separate EVA from reclaimed silicon powder in end-of-life PV modules with “minimal” chemical usage. The proposed technique provides silicon powder that could be reused as a raw material for upcycling into silicon nitride, silicon oxide, or silicon carbide.

Powering adventure with solar

The allure of the open road is strong in the United States, where highways can snake through breathtaking landscapes. Recreational vehicles (RVs) make adventuring easy but powering portable homes with diesel generators is a poor solution for today’s travelers. Briter Products President Avanti Lalwani tells pv magazine how her company is putting solar on wheels.
