Conergy completes UK’s biggest PV park

Built in cooperation with Lark Energy, the German company’s local partner, the photovoltaic park is located in Hawton, near Newark on Trent.

Robert Goss, Head of Conergy UK described the construction process as a "race against" time to meet the July 31 deadline – when the new feed-in tariff rates come into play.

"The deadline was imposed by the recent review of the feed-in tariff incentive payments for large-scale solar projects that are to be slashed by 72 percent," he said. "All parties showed great determination to support this exciting project, which will be one of a very few large solar projects installed in 2011."

Overall, the installation covers an area of 14.6 hectares. It comprises 21,600 Conergy PowerPlus modules. Annually, the modules are expected to generate 4,860 MW hours of clean electricity, which is said to be enough to supply 1,300 homes.

Conergy said that the local residents wholly supported the solar project. In a statement, the company reported: "A community research conducted prior to the installation showed that 100 percent of the respondents generally favoured the idea of solar energy as a clean, renewable energy solution with no emissions."

The Hawton solar project is owned and developed by Lightsource with funding from Octopus Investments.

At five MW, the park is significantly bigger than any other photovoltaic projects in the UK. Just last week, it was announced that the next three biggest systems – one MW, 1.15 MW and 1.4 MW respectively – had either been completed or were nearing completion.
