Some 54,314 photovoltaic panels will be installed on 67 acres of land owned by the Grove Farm community development and property management company near the town of Koloa.

Pending approvals, construction will begin on the Grove Farm project in July 2013 with the facility online in 2014.

The Grove Farm project is one of three planned by the Kaua’i Island Utility Co-Operative (KIUC), which will result in a total of 30 MW generation capacity – roughly half the daytime energy demand of the island – KIUC pledged to have in place by 2023.

From its Kaua’i base in Mililani, SolarCity has already supplied solar power systems at locations including the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Marine Biology department of the University of Hawaii, the main airport at Lihu’e as well as a project to supply 2,000 military homes with solar generated electricity through the use of solar arrays on 600 houses.

Recently, SolarCity announced that it had been issued with a subpoena by the U.S. Department of Treasury, which is investigating the companies’ participation in the Section 1603 grant program. If irregularities are found, it could be liable to pay damages.
