It was announced at the end of June that Brazils first commercial-scale photovoltaic plant was connected to the grid. Due to a new agreement between MPX and GE, the one MW plant is set to be increased to two MW.
However, it has been said that the second phase of the Tauá solar plant has been authorized by the National Electrical Energy Agency (ANEEL) and licensed by the Ceara state Environment Department (SEMACE) to expand its capacity up to five MW.
Eduardo Karrer, CEO of MPX added that the goal is to increase this amount to 50 MW in the future. "MPX has invested in developing solar energy for the medium and long term," he stated. "Working with GE, we plan to grow our business at this plant to 50 MW."
Currently the photovoltaic plant, which is located in the city of Tauá, 360 kilometers from Fortaleza, the capital city of the Ceará region, comprises 4,680 photovoltaic panels.
Under the new agreement, GE will provide a further one MW system via its thin film panels, inverters, transformers, and monitoring and control system. The move marks the companys entrance into the Brazilian photovoltaic market.
Thus far, the project has received $5.8 million in investment, including around $695,000 from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).
pv magazine is waiting to hear back from GE with regards to its plans for scaling up the plant to 50 MW.
Brazil's photovoltaic potential was recently highlighted at this year's EU PVSEC where a large number of equipment manufacturers predicted the rise of the South American country in the industry.
