The 66 MW Alpine Solar Generating Station will sell photovoltaic generated energy to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company under a 20-year PPA. The project was developed by NRG's subsidiary NRG Solar.

The project at Alpine, east of San Diego, is one of NRG‘s eight utility-scale projects across three U.S. states with others at Agua Caliente (under construction) and Avra Valley in Arizona; Roadrunner in New Mexico; and Avenal, Blythe, Borrego (under construction) and California Valley Solar Ranch (under construction) in California.

A ninth power plant not yet producing power, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in California, will be completed before the end of the year.
