Everything is growing at Sunrun – including customer acquisition costs

Sunrun saw growth in deployments, revenues, cash and funding, as it expands its solar+storage business and pursues capacity sales. But the company and the larger third-party solar space are facing a sticky problem.

‘Unprecedented’ collaboration between EV manufacturers could launch large-scale transition

Energy analysts from the United Kingdom have found that many of the world’s largest car manufacturers that are launching EVs, or looking to launch EVs, are engaged in an “unprecedented” level of collaboration in order to share the costs and risks inherent in EV development. Cornwall Insight found that the collaboration could see a major boom in supply from the early 2020s.

Don’t have a node for your solar plant? Connect it to the railway!

Railway operators can now feasibly connect solar plants to traction substations, claims a consortium that is now working on a similar demonstration project in the U.K. Almost all of the 30 kW installation’s output will be used to move trains, but in the future storage could come into the picture for larger “railway-connected” solar power projects, says 10:10, the U.K.-based climate change charity that developed the pilot.

Economics of road transport starting to favor renewables

According to a new report by BNP Paribas Asset Management, renewables offer more advantages than simply mitigating climate change. Electricity is easier to transport than oil, and wind and solar electricity prices are much more stable than volatile oil prices. An analyst from the French bank argues that major producers will need to reduce oil prices below $20 to compete with clean energy in the transport sector.

CleanPeak expands solar mall portfolio in Australia with ReNu acquisition

ReNu Energy signed an agreement last week for the sale of its Australian solar assets to CleanPeak Energy, a commercial rooftop solar startup.

Mayor of London wants another 2.5 MW of rooftop solar by next summer

A group buying program which has prompted more than 600 rooftop arrays across 14 boroughs in the capital is set to be extended next month with officials hoping another 700-1,000 households will embrace the scheme by June.

Utility scale, rather than behind-the-meter batteries will drive energy storage take-up – Bloomberg u-turn

The analyst has published its latest Energy Storage Outlook report and says large scale deployment will provide the majority of the 1,095 GW/2,850 GWh of battery storage worldwide in 2040, with prices driven down further by grid services demand and EVs.

National program to drive virtual power plant participation in Australia

The scheme will test the potential of distributed energy resources such as rooftop systems, battery storage and controllable load devices aggregated into VPPs to provide scalable energy and network services traditionally performed by large scale, conventional electricity generators. With registration open, the Australian Energy Market Operator wants VPPs to register to accelerate shared learning.

Solar’s 20 most overlooked benefits for global sustainability

As renewable energy development is ramped up to address the climate crisis, negative side-effects should be avoided, especially when technology and resources could maximize the benefits. ‘Techno-ecological’ crossovers could ensure win-win outcomes for solar development and ecosystem and biodiversity conservation.

Australia’s green bank to sharpen focus on storage following record investment in renewables

After it deployed a record $1.3 billion into the clean energy sector in a 12-month period, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation said it will sharpen its focus on energy storage and other technologies to support the stability of the national grid.
