Kyocera expands storage offering in Germany

Kyocera Corporation is expanding its storage market footprint in Germany.

The Japanese group is partnering with local PV distributor Energetik Solartechnologie-Vertriebs GmbH and monitoring systems provider Solare Datensysteme GmbH to offer an energy storage solution for residential use in Germany.

The new solution includes Kyocera’s battery storage system and Solare Datensysteme’s energy monitoring software and hardware and can be combined with solar power generating systems to realize power generation and power storage at home. Energetik will begin sales of the units in May.

The storage system features a multi inverter which achieves a high charging efficiency of 97% while realizing a cost advantage for customers. The inverter and battery box are separated into two compact units, allowing it to be installed easily and flexibly in homes. The batteries will be available in two sizes, 4.8 kWh and 7.2 kWh. In addition, Solare Datensysteme’s monitoring software and hardware, Solar-Log, provides comprehensive data on the state of electricity usage, allowing users to further optimize energy use in their homes.

The companies point out that the expansion of renewable energy in Germany in recent years has caused concerns about instability in the electricity grid. Furthermore, there is a growing demand for storage systems to facilitate the self-consumption of electricity created by solar power generating systems in response to decreasing feed-in-tariffs for renewable energy and rising electricity costs.

“With the growing use of solar energy, self-consumption is becoming increasingly important in order to reduce burden on the electricity grid,” said Nobuo Kitamura, senior executive officer and general manager of Kyocera’s Corporate Solar Energy Group.

“An intelligent energy management solution more than ever is the key factor for a responsible and sustainable global energy supply for everyone,” added Solare Datensysteme CEO Frank Schlichting.

Energetik Managing Director Frank Rohland stressed that the storage batteries available all-in-one with Kyocera’s solar modules and inverters would not only reduce reliance on the electricity grid but could also be used without grid connection.

The partnership expands Kyocera's existing international collaboration with Energetik. The company agreed last year to handle Kyocera's solar sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in what it described as a strategic alliance that pooled the interests and increased the flexibility of both companies.

Kyocera, the leading supplier of residential lithium-ion battery storage systems in Japan, was recently named one of the Top 100 Global Innovators of 2014 by Thomson Reuters.

In October, Kyocera teamed up with energy optimization company Stem to provide an integrated solar PV and energy storage solution to the commercial market in the United States.
