Norwegian solar developer Scatec Solar has revealed it is among the successful bidders to develop the 19 renewable energy schemes approved by the South African government to provide a further 1 GW of generation capacity.
The South African government has committed R28 billion (US$2.9 billion) to 19 renewables projects in the second window of its Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer (REIPP) program with nine of the schemes totaling 417 MW devoted to photovoltaics.
Scatec has announced it is among the successful solar bidders and will develop two projects worth a total $388 million at Linde in the Northern Cape and at Dreunberg in the Eastern Cape, with the two projects adding 115 MW to the country's solar capacity.
On a good day for the Norwegian company, it also announced that its 75 MW Kalkbult project in the Northern Cape is expected to be finished in October two months ahead of schedule.
The Scatec projects like all the renewables schemes will sell energy to national utility Eskom under 20-year PPAs.
Capital investment for the Scatec projects will be provided by South Africa's largest bank Standard Bank which recently signed a R20 billion funding support agreement for renewables projects with its shareholder the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
