Netherlands’ ECN achieves 30.2% efficiency for bifacial tandem cell based on perovskite

The cell was created by applying a newly developed perovskite cell on top of an industrial bifacial crystalline silicon version. The resulting cell is said to better harvest sunlight, as one unit is optimized for high energy photons and the other absorbs low energy particles.

Gridserve to deploy 60 MW of bifacial-plus-tracking projects in the UK

Two sites with capacities of 34.7 MW and 25.7 MW will supply unsubsidized power to Warrington Borough Council. The smaller project will provide the local authority’s energy needs and reduce its electricity bill while the larger one will sell renewable energy on the open market, further bolstering council income.

If bifacial panels can compete on price the (backsheet) choice is clear

Jinko Solar has launched a new bifacial solar module, with a clear backsheet manufactured by DuPont, to compete with standard glass-on-glass bifacial products, as well to create markets where bifacial might not have previously fit.

Inside JinkoSolar’s US factory

The Chinese manufacturer is ramping the third-largest module factory in the United States, as part of a resurgence in U.S. module manufacturing.

Trina to ship 16 MW of its bifacial panels for French projects

The Chinese manufacturer will supply EDF with around 45,000 bifacial, double glass Duomax Twin panels. The French utility will use the modules for two large-scale projects selected through tenders held by energy regulator CRE.

“Spain is the hottest PPA market in the world, but auctions are necessary”

That was the one of the main conclusions reached among 400 attendees at the Solar plants in Spain: development, financing and energy future conference, organized by Soltec and PV association UNEF in Madrid this week.

Bifacial modules ridin’ down the highway

The Dutch government will deploy bifacial PV modules on noise barriers along the country’s main roads. A first, 400m solar array has been built along the A50 near Uden, in the Netherlands’ southern province of Noord-Brabant.

PI Berlin findings say little about module quality in Europe

PI Berlin analysis has suggested the quality of modules is particularly high in Asian factories with a large throughput. However, just 2% of the 67 GW of production capacity audited for the study originated in Europe. The audits for the white paper were mostly carried out by Solarbuyer between 2012 and 2018.

Understanding bifacial boost

Belgian research institute imec has developed a new simulation framework it says can calculate the expected output of a bifacial PV system. The model could help improve developer understanding of the best system configurations for bifacial, and foster confidence among investors by providing a precise prediction of energy yields.

Bifacial 114 MW project in Brazil secures development bank financing

The plant, under development by Canadian Solar, has secured $80 million from Banco do Nordeste. The facility is scheduled to come online in mid-2020.
