The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) in New York has announced a second round of its Clean Solar Initiative to foster a further 100 MW of solar energy, with a focus on stressed areas of the Long Island grid.
Clean Solar Initiative II (CSI-II) will encourage developers of 100 kW to 2 MW sized schemes to bid against each other over the price they can offer clean energy for with the successful bidders selling energy to LIPA through a 20-year PPA.
In a bid to focus generation on designated areas east of LIPA's Canal substation in Southampton, a premium of US$0.07/kWh (0.05/kWh) will be available. If successful, distributed generation will remove or defer the need for electricity generation, infrastructure and distribution investment in the overloaded area of the Long Island grid.
In announcing the news on its website on Monday, LIPA also revealed plans for two more clean energy projects by the end of the year.
A FIT is being formulated to foster a further 20 MW of energy from wind, fuel cells and other renewables and requests for proposals are being drawn up by LIPA for up to 280 MW of renewable generation.
