India to raise customs duty on solar inverters

Imported inverters and solar lanterns may become costlier from April, as the new budget raised the charges levied on them from 5%, for each category, to 20% and 15%, respectively.

Chinese PV Industry Brief: More wafer and polysilicon capacity and new suppy deals

Wuxi Autowell has begun construction on its 50 GW wafer factory in Guangdong province and Longi and Wuxi Shangji Automation have announced new supply deals. GCL-Poly has announced it will raise the production capacity of its factory in Jiangsu from 6,000 to 10,000 metric tons – despite the company suffering a cross-default at the weekend.

Two innovative approaches to funding African solar

With Cape Town-based The Sun Exchange’s cell-level solar leasing model now reportedly serving 19,000 micro investors, linking finance directly to carbon emission tonnage is another route to bringing PV investment to fruition across the continent.

Macquarie sets up unit to build 8 GW solar project pipeline in Europe

Green Investment Group, owned by Macquarie, has launched Cero Generation, which will operate on a European scale and carry out both ground-mounted and commercial scale power generation projects. It will also provide integrated energy storage solutions.

France allocates 191.3 MW in commercial and industrial PV tender

The final average price for power generated by solar systems with capacities ranging from 100 kW to 500 kW came in at €91.2/MWh. The price for installations ranging in size from 500 kW to 8 MW was €79.8/MWh.

Active self-cleaning tech for PV modules

An international research team has developed a cleaning system for solar panels that combines a vibrating device with the use of hydrophilic curved rungs. The technique is claimed to be able to remove the surface contaminants through the internal flow of vibrating water droplets applied with a pipette onto the module surface and transported, under vibration, to the contaminated parts.

US balance-of-system player Shoals Technologies raises $2 billion in IPO

Shoals Technologies Group and its parent sold 88.5 million shares during the initial public offering in late January.

SN Power acquisition secures 10.5 GW pipeline for developer Scatec

The renewables business formerly known as Scatec Solar has added a 2.5 GW hydropower portfolio in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and also added its first wind farm while reporting a consolidated loss of almost $43 million for the year.

Stochastic fractal search algorithm to measure parameters of PV modules

An international research team has used, for the first time, a powerful metaheuristic and a nature-inspired algorithm to improve the estimation of the parameters of PV cells and modules. The algorithm imitates the natural phenomenon of growth and uses the diffusion process, based on random fractals.

Renewable energy project financing in Chile analyzed

Taking a renewable energy project into its operational phase calls for several workstreams to be synchronized. The one that perhaps jumps out the most is permitting processes: correctly navigating the intricate and time-sensitive steps for licenses and permits. Regardless, each workstream calls for a different set of skills, and because of interlinked chicken-or-egg causality, it is difficult to say which single element is most important in a project’s development. However, there is an unsung element of the financial closing which has as much, if not more, impact on a project’s profitability than the cost of debt does: the underlying terms and conditions.
