Utility Scale PV

Photon, Toshiba building unsubsidized 120 MW solar fishery in Taiwan

A Toshiba-led consortium has secured a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 120 MW solar fishery project in Taiwan. Completion is scheduled by the end of 2024.

Hybridizing wind with PV may raise value of wind assets by up to 5%

Research from Portugal has looked into adding utility scale PV capacity to wind plants across the country and found the hybridization can significantly increase their market value. The scientists also identified the most critical parameters for forecasting energy generation in hybrid wind-solar plants.

August impacts on Asia’s solar production

In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that Southern India was the standout in terms of unusual irradiance in Asia in August, with 40% more than the month’s average. This brought the average irradiance up to 6 kWh per day.

Argentinian provinces unite to build 2.5 GW of solar

The governors of 10 Argentinian provinces have agreed to work with the national government on a 2.5 GW solar project that could require an investment of up to $2.5 billion.

Australia’s large-scale PV segment is stagnating

Despite Australia’s favorable policy landscape, the nation’s large-scale PV segment is in decline, with disappointing figures for certificate registrations this year. However, Sunwiz Managing Director Warwick Johnston says there is a significant gap between “rhetoric” and reality.

European Parliament sets 24-month limit to approve renewables projects

The European Parliament has approved a 24-month limit for the approval of renewable energy projects, with a requirement that national authorities complete the process within 12 months for installations in “areas conducive to renewables” and within 24 months for projects outside of these areas.

Hybrid hydro-PV systems increase producer profits by up to 18-21% in sub-Saharan Africa

A team of researchers from Norway analyzed a case study of a cascade hydropower system hybridized with both floating and ground mounted PV under sub-Saharan African market conditions. It found that hybrid systems can reduce seasonal variability in renewable energy generation and increase annual producer profits under both PPA and spot market schemes.

The Hydrogen Stream: Liquid hydrogen test flight could enable long-distance flights

H2FLY claims that a recent three-hour test flight, entirely powered by liquid hydrogen, could lead to sustainable long-range flights fueled by liquefied, cryogenic hydrogen. Solaris, meanwhile, has started selling hydrogen buses in Italy.
