Scientists in China have developed a novel PV-powered cooling and heating system that combines a water-cooled gas cooler and an air-cooled gas cooler. The system went through a series of simulations and showed it can potentially achieve a coefficient of performance of up to 7.34.
The new product features a coefficient of performance of 4.9 and sound levels of 52–56 db(A).
Korean scientists have designed a liquid air energy storage (LAES) technology that reportedly overcomes the major limitation of LAES systems – their relatively low round-trip efficiency. The novel system enhances efficiency by increasing power output through the generation of thermal energy using natural gas as the external fuel during energy release.
The Sweden-based heat pump provider said its new product is one of the slimmest and most compact system available on the market to date.

The new heat pumps use R-454B as a refrigerant and are specifically designed to be matched with Johnson Controls’ residential gas furnaces. Their size ranges from 1.5 tons to 5 tons and their coefficient of performance (COP) spans between 3.24 and 3.40, according to the manufacturer.
The Japanese manufacturer said its new heat pump line features a modular approach to system design. The new products are available with capacities of 100 kW, 125 kW and 160 kW and can reportedly achieve a water output temperature of 60 C.
The UK manufacturer said its new ground-source heat pump has an nominal thermal rating of 3-6 kW and is able to produce hot water temperatures up to 65 C.
Heat pump sales fell by 5% in 14 European countries last year, reversing the trend of annual sales increases over the last decade.
Polish manufacturer Corab has developed a new ground-source heat pump with several components supplied by Denmark’s Danfoss. It offers 8 kW to 16 kW of rated thermal power.
