SolarEdge launches inverter with EV-charging capability

SolarEdge has combined its inverter technology with an EV charger, which according to the company offers a ‘solar boost mode’ that can charge up to 2.5 times faster than a standard charger supplied with an electric vehicle (EV).

The Mode 3 EV charger is being launched on the European market as of this week. The charger is integrated with SolarEdge’s HD-Wave inverter, a solution which, according to SolarEdge, will offer considerable cost savings on both hardware and labor, reducing the need for additional wiring and inspection.

“SolarEdge is committed to providing innovative solutions that help more people gain control of their energy usage,” stated Alfred Karlstetter, general manager of SolarEdge Europe. “Our EV-charging, single-phase inverter makes it easier for individuals to maximize self-consumption and increase energy independence.”

The combined inverter and EV charger can utilize ‘solar boost mode’ – where it draws power from both the grid and a PV installation – to charge up to 9.2kW (32 Amp), which the company says is up to 2.5 times faster than standard EV chargers. Without a PV installation to drawn additional power from, the inverter can charge up to 7.4 kW.

The product will be supplied with a 12-year warranty, and should be available throughout Europe by the third quarter of 2018.

SolarEdge reported a record year for revenue in 2017, and expects to bring in more than US$200 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2018. The company also launched its 3 phase inverter solution to the Japanese market earlier this year, in partnership with domestic inverter producer Omron.
