Researchers in Italy have analyzed the techno-economic viability of enhancing three pumped hydro plants in Italy with floating PV on the lower basin. They say that, with their wide results, consequences could be extrapolated to similar regions.
The plant features 12 reversible pump-turbine units, each with a capacity of 300 MW, including two variable-speed units, bringing the total installed capacity to 3.6 GW.
Queensland electricity utility Cleanco has set a new quarterly generation record at its 570 MW Wivenhoe Power Station, which outshines all previous production milestones since the station opened in 1984.
With a total investment of around CNY12.5 billion ($1.76 billion), the project located in Jiande City, Zhejiang Province, is expected to commence power generation before 2030.
Scientists in Morocco have evaluated how hybrid wind solar plants may be combined with pumped hydro storage to power remote rural areas. The proposed system was found to have an LCOE $0.03831/kWh and a 86% use factor.
Indian hydropower provider SJVN said the pumped hydro storage project will be deployed across Darzo Nallah, a tributary of the Tuipui River.
As the UK awaits the outcome of the proposed Cap & Floor mechanism for long duration storage project, the pipeline of proposed pumped hydro storage projects is progressively growing.
The Happurg pumped storage plant was shut down in 2011 for safety reasons after the base of the upper reservoir was damaged. Uniper has carried out feasibility studies on the site, with a view to reconnecting it to the grid in 2028. The facility can store approximately 850 MWh of electricity in the form of pumped water.
Plans to build a 5 GW/120 GWh pumped hydro energy storage system in Queensland’s Pioneer Valley have received a positive boost with geotechnical investigations revealing the site is ideally suited for dam and tunnel construction.
According to projections from Norwegian consultancy Rystad Energy, Southeast Asia’s share of pumped storage hydropower is set to increase nearly eightfold in less than a decade – from 2.3 GW today to 18 GW by 2033. Rystad’s figures say that there is currently 2.7 GW of pumped hydro storage under construction, while the remaining 13.3 GW is in various stages of development.
