Iraq unveils $1.6 billion renewable energy plans
18. October 2012 | Applications & Installations, Global PV markets, Industry & Suppliers, Markets & Trends | By: Becky BeetzAccording to reports, Iraq plans to channel US$1.6 billion over the next three years into solar and wind power, with the aim of adding 400 MW to the national grid.
The Ministry of Energy, reports Reuters, is trying to reduce the number of daily blackouts in Iraq through the use of solar and wind. It adds that invitations have been sent to a number of companies, including Toshiba and ABB encouraging them to set up manufacturing facilities and power plants there.
Laith al-Mamury, head of the planning and studies department at the Ministry of Electricity reportedly said that $200 million will be spent in 2013 to add 50 MW to the grid next year. He added that solar and wind should account for 2% of power in Iraq in the future.
The Ministry of Electricity could not be reached for comment.
